The Gislingham bell ringers are very proud that one of their number, Alan Stanley, has recently been elected as the Chairman of The Suffolk Guild of Bellringers. This is a real honour because Alan has not been ringing long in relative terms. He started learning at Palgrave while we were raising money to restore the bells in our tower.
We are also very honoured that our tower has been chosen by the Guild as the venue for this year’s eight bell striking competition. This will take place on the evening of Saturday May 18th and will mean there will be several teams of ringers from around the county who will ring for a short time and be judged on the accuracy of their ringing.
If you are interested in finding out more about ringing that will be an ideal opportunity as there will be some very experienced ringers who I’m sure will be able to answer any questions you might have. There will be refreshments available in the church. If, however, you would like to see the bells and how they are rung then you would be very welcome to come to any of our practices which take place every Wednesday at 7.30pm, or ring Kay Lucas on 01379 788411.
Bell ringing is something that anyone aged from about 8 years up can learn. It is very good for backs because of the gentle stretching involved and as you get more experienced and begin to learn method ringing it is an excellent way of exercising your brain!
