Gislingham man given conditional discharge after child cruelty trial

Gerald West, from Martins Meadow, Gislingham, along with another man, was given a conditional discharge by Ipswich Crown Court after pleading guilty to a charge of cruelty to a person aged under 16. The charges date from when West was employed by Oakwood School in Stowmarket.

According to the Diss Express, the judge – in summing up – said that there had been gross breaches of trust but that each incident appeared to be isolated “loss of control” and not part of a pattern of mistreatment.

The judge added that the men may have been working without adequate training and support.
