This West End musical is one of the best Disney classics by far. Mary Poppins is a show for the family and has impressed all ages from young to
old. Combining much-loved characters, it includes numerous laughs, villains and a very high standard of acting. It’s unsurprising that it has become one of the best hits of the Disney productions.
The plot includes a family of four with badly behaved children, Jane and Michael Banks, who unsurprisingly lose a lot of nannies, until one day Mary Poppins (Zizi Strallen) floats down from the sky and lands on the Banks’ doorstep. However, with Mr Banks (Milo Twoney), depressed thinking he’s ruined the bank, Mary Poppins has a lot of work to do. This is a story about self-discovery and trust. Will Mary Poppins save the day or will it end in a catastrophe?
We meet a range of characters who include: Mary Poppins (Zizi Strallen) a woman with
a lot of tolerance; Bert (Mat Lee) who, in my eyes, is the star of the show; George Banks (Milo Twoney) who doesn’t have enough confidence; Jane and Michael Banks (Madeline Banbury and Jabez Cheeseman) who both have a lesson to learn! Miss Andrew is the villain who has a nickname of ‘The Holy Terror.’ And finally Miss Brill, the housemaid who provides numerous laughs! Set across 1900’s Edwardian London, the costumes were made to precision.
No musical is complete without a spectacular soundtrack and it goes without saying the songs are really supercalifragilistickexpealidocious! Composed by the Sherman brothers, this incredible play is second-to-none. With the early rendition of “chim chimney” sung by Bert which really got the crowd going. Each song is dazzling and memorable and for every song I’m sure you’ll be tapping your feet and singing along in no time.
To sum up, I highly recommend you go and see this in the theatre as it is a one-of-a-kind show. Mary Poppins is a treat for the family and can be watched time and time again. Above all, this show earns a five-star rating from me.
On behalf of the class, we thoroughly enjoyed the visit and we are most grateful for the kind donations towards the cost of this trip from both Gislingham United Charities and the Gislingham Variety Club.
