Restrictions on keeping chickens under cover that were originally scheduled to be lifted 28th February will continue following the discovery of the H5N8 strain of avian flu at a second farm. An additional 55,000 birds in Redgrave are to be slaughtered. Once the cull has taken place, the farm will be cleansed and disinfected.
The rules, which affect people keeping chickens in Gislingham, may be lifted at some point once the cleansing work has been carried out.
Although the measures are being taken as a precaution, the risk to public health from the virus is thought to be very low.
